We have learned how to function. We invest in appearance and performance, meet expectations, fulfil responsibilities, organise our time, manage our tasks, and pursue our goals. We stay productive and keep going, even when we are not truly at ease. We function even while internally overwhelmed. We learn to communicate efficiently, but not to express our emotional selves with honesty. The heart then grows burdened, and that burden reveals itself through mental strain. By neglecting to sit with ourselves and contemplate our own creation, we gradually forget Allah; and in that forgetfulness and heedlessness, we eventually forget ourselves. As Allah reminds us in the Qur’an: “And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves.”[1]

The Heart and Its Source of Rest

Allah says in the Qur’an: “Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”[2]

This ayah, if looked carefully, is not simply a reminder to engage in dhikr, to merely invoke Arabic terms or the names of Allah without grasping their meaning. Rather, it describes how the human heart was created to function. A heart that remembers Allah with awareness and understanding of His attributes does not always escape difficulty. However it remains anchored. It knows where to turn when hardship comes.

When the heart becomes disconnected from its source, it begins to search for stability elsewhere. Many people try to manage emotional discomfort through distraction and escapism. Escapism occurs when a person constantly seeks to avoid confronting what they feel internally by remaining occupied through entertainment, work, excessive scrolling, or endless stimulation. These distractions may provide temporary relief from emotional discomfort, but they do not resolve what is happening within.

This is because the heart cannot truly settle with distraction. It settles only with pure connection with Allah. Without that connection, emotional experiences begin to feel heavier, more confusing, and more difficult to navigate.

As Allah says in the Qur’an: “And whoever turns away from My remembrance, indeed he will have a constricted life.”[3]

Scholars such as Ibn Kathir explain that this constriction is not about lack of wealth or outward comfort. It is an inner tightness: a state of unease, agitation, bewilderment and doubt that remains even when life appears stable. He says: “Even if he appears to be in comfort outwardly and he wears whatever he likes, eats whatever he likes and lives wherever he wants, he will not be happy. For verily, his heart will not have pure certainty and guidance.” [4]

What is often observed is that emotions are often misunderstood. They are dismissed as weakness or treated as something to control or avoid. From both psychological and spiritual perspectives, however, emotions carry meaning. They are not our enemies; they are indicators.

Anxiety may reflect a heart that feels unsafe or overwhelmed.

Anger can point toward unmet needs, injustice, or unprocessed hurt.

Sadness may emerge from loss, disconnection, or a deeper longing for meaning.

Difficult emotions reveal areas of neglect within the self, patterns of avoidance, and a weakened connection with Allah. In this sense, emotional pain can be a wake‑up call. It invites us to pause, reflect, and realign.

When emotions are ignored or suppressed, their underlying meanings remain overlooked. They intensify or manifest in other ways, sometimes through physical symptoms, strained relationships, or a persistent sense of emptiness. An anxious thought may arise when we confront our feelings; a painful emotion may surface, but that does not mean we must lose ourselves within it. So the question arises: how can we, in our daily lives, cultivate this balance, becoming aware of our emotions without being consumed by them? The solution lies in awareness of Allah. To recognise what we feel, to regulate it, and to direct it toward the one where the hearts find rest.

Practical Ways to Guard Against Emotional Consumption

Practice Muraqabah

Contemporary psychology offers a framework for something Islam, through the practice of muraqabah, has long nurtured. Within Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), one helpful skill is known as cognitive defusion: the ability to objectively examine thoughts and feelings rather than immediately accepting them as absolute truth or becoming consumed by them.[5] This involves actively approaching one’s emotions with awareness and examination instead of reacting impulsively to them.

Islam cultivates a deep watchfulness over the inner state of the self. The practice of muraqabah invites a believer to become aware of what is moving within the heart while remaining conscious of Allah’s presence.

As Allah says in the Qur’an: “And He is with you wherever you are.”[6]

This awareness is not automatic. It is developed over time. In practice, muraqabah begins by slowing down before reacting. A person pauses and objectively examines what is happening within: What am I feeling? What is driving my actions? What is my intention? This conscious pause helps us examine our emotions, instead of impulsively reacting to it.

This is connected to the hadith narrated by Abu Huraira (Radhi Allahu Anhu), where the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم defined ihsan (excellence) as: “To worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.”[7]

The first part of this definition is often less discussed. Living with the awareness that Allah sees us is the very heart of muraqabah. This awareness is not restricted to formal worship, but extends throughout daily life: in how we speak, how we react, and how we carry what we feel.

Memorise the Qur’an

Another way of staying conscious of Allah is through the memorisation of the Qur’an. This practice keeps oneself focused on the words of Allah, attentive to pronunciation, flow, and meaning. It prevents distraction and anchors the mind in remembrance. The benefit is deeper when memorisation is combined with understanding of the Arabic, so that recitation, tajweed, and comprehension occur together. In this way, one remains occupied with what Allah commands and grows closer to Him. The effort of memorisation itself becomes a form of cognitive regulation, redirecting the mind from wandering into fixation toward purposeful engagement with divine speech. When emotions begin to consume a person, this discipline provides a redirection toward conscious awareness of Allah.

Verbalise your Emotions

The life of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم provides a powerful framework for translating one’s emotional pain. During the Year of Sorrow, he experienced immense grief after losing both Khadijah رضي الله عنها and his uncle Abu Talib, two of his greatest sources of comfort and support. His response to that pain is deeply instructive.[8] He did not deny his grief, nor did he hide from Allah within it. He continued to turn toward his Lord.

And in moments of rejection and emotional exhaustion, such as after the painful experience in Ta’if, he poured out his distress in sincere du’aa.[9] Rather than suppressing his emotions, he carried them to Allah. This shows that feeling deeply is not a weakness. The Prophetic model does not reflect emotional numbness; rather, it reflects honesty in emotion, directed wholly toward Allah.

Turning toward Allah is not only about believing that He knows what is in our hearts. It is also about expressing those emotions to Him.

Sometimes people assume that because Allah already knows their pain, there is no need to verbalise it. As a result, they stop expressing what they feel, stop making sincere du’aa, and silently carry emotions within themselves. Over time, this silence can become a form of emotional suppression.

Yet Islam teaches us to ask, to supplicate, and to turn our emotions into words before Allah. Du’aa is not only a request for outcomes; it is also an act of emotional honesty and dependence upon Allah. As Allah says: “And your Lord says, “Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” [10]

The Qur’an presents the example of Ya’qub (Alayhis Salam), who said:

“I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah.”[11]

His grief was real, but it was directed correctly. This is what emotional strength looks like in Islam.

From this we understand that a person may begin simply: by speaking honestly to Allah in du’aa, by journaling reflections, by putting emotions into words. The act of verbalising what one feels before Allah is itself part of returning to Him.

Schedule Your Time to Reflect Upon Your Emotions

Treat your thoughts as you treat your tasks, schedule them. Set aside a specific time for reflection, and outside of that time avoid dwelling on emotions; this protects you from being overwhelmed. When you set a fixed time for contemplation, utilise it to verbalise your emotions by supplicating and invoking Allah. This discipline creates boundaries between necessary reflection and harmful rumination, allowing emotions to be acknowledged without dominating your day.

If we observe carefully, Islam itself has prescribed times when du’aa is best invoked, such as in the last third of the night, between the Adhaan and Iqaamah, during sujood, and in the final hour before Maghrib on Fridays. These periods emphasise the importance of scheduling our time for verbalising emotions and calling upon Allah for help. In those periods, one not only seeks divine help but also explains and understands the state of one’s emotions. The act of scheduling reflection and supplication becomes both a safeguard against being consumed by thoughts and a means of directing the heart toward Allah.

Just as tasks are scheduled to avoid disorder, reflection and supplication are scheduled to protect the self; verbalising emotions prevents suppression, while memorisation of the Qur’an protects from overconsumption of thoughts and feelings. The forms are different, one through supplication and the other through recitation, yet both redirect the believer to Allah.

Conclusion

The way forward is not to ignore emotions, and it is not to become consumed by them. It is to reconnect. This begins with acknowledging emotional experiences, reminding ourselves that the heart has drifted and needs to return. Instead of suppressing or reacting impulsively, a person then learns to observe and understand what the emotion is indicating.

It is the heart that determines a person’s sense of peace. When the heart reconnects with Allah, anxiety may still visit. Sadness may still come. Life does not suddenly become free of hardship. But the experience of carrying those emotions begins to change. The anxious heart remembers where to turn. The grieving heart knows it is not alone. The overwhelmed heart pauses before it drowns.

And perhaps this is what returning to Allah often looks like. Not a life with no pain, but a heart that knows how to regulate itself.

As the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Indeed, in the body there is a piece of flesh.
